List of things to carry in your bag for your hike

Are you heading out for a hike for the first time, but not sure what to bring along? This article will help you in packing your bag whether you're a beginner or a pro.

Hiking is one of the best ways to escape from our day-to-day lives, explore nature and have a good day with friends or family. But there’s a lot more having fun. You also have to pack the right essentials and gear to be prepared for anything!

Without further ado, let’s discover these hiking essentials that belong on your packing list.

First Aid Kit

Hiking in the mountains can result in unexpected injuries and you should be prepared to handle common injuries to save yourself from long-term infections.

Emergency Shelter

emergency, shelter, hike, bivvy, weather, temperature, backpack, sleeping bag

All this technology in this world and still no one can predict the perfect weather condition. So, Temperatures can drop overnight. You have to protect yourself if you have to sleep outdoors, so, bivvy is a small sleeping bag, it traps heat and it rolls up smaller than your fist. It’s lightweight and fits perfectly at the bottom of the backpack, where hopefully you’ll never have to use it, and it rests for your whole journey.

Water

The most crucial item on hiking essentials list is water, you cannot survive without water so you should carry at least 0.5 Litre of water for every hour of hiking, Double it for high heat hikes in summers. Avoid dense, stainless steel water bottles and carry your water in a light-weighted, reusable water bottle to avoid extra, unnecessary weight.
Having a small water filtration device for emergencies never hurt and it would save your life if you have to drink water from a stream.

Map

Even if you’re going to that path for the 10th time, you have to carry a physical map. It is the most reliable and you won’t be relying on Google maps. You can also pick one of the physical map from the park headquarters or sometimes at the trailhead.

Headlamp

light, headlamp, hike, mountains, night, dark, head

Every hiker should carry some sort of illumination or light which will help in the dark. Cell Phone flash is not reliable, I would prefer having a headlamp to keep my hands-free while hiking/walking. And make sure you have enough batteries before heading out.

Extra Layers

I have said it before and will say it again that you can never predict weather in mountains or hilly areas. So, regardless of the season, you should have extra layers in your backpack.

Sun Protection

Carry sun protection unless you want sunburn. It’s important to protect your skin and face from sun. It is an essential for any hike and you’ll have to reapply after every few hours. Skin protection doesn’t stop at just sunscreen, carry a hat and sunglasses to protect your face, neck, and eyes is always a good option.

Fire Starter

What will you do if you have to spend the night in wilderness? My recommendation is to carry storm-proof matches and fire starter. They both are lightweighted, inexpensive, and takes very little space.

Pocket Knife

Always carry a small pocket knife in your hiking backpack.

Snacks

snacks, food, bars, hike, protein, nutrition, hunger, hungry

You need nutrition to function and there’s nothing worse than a hungry person, so pack plenty of snacks and protein bars to keep you going throughout your hike. You don’t want to leave your dirt behind to bother locals, bring a trash bag.

Identification & Money

It is technically not an essential, but it’s always a good idea to carry your ID card, credit/debit cards, and some cash on a hike. You never know when you’ll be needing them and it’s better to be prepared for any scenario.

Bug Spray

Mosquitos are the worst, especially in the summers. Pack a small, travel-size bug spray in your bag is a great way to save yourself.

Walkie Talkies

walkie talkie, phone, network, service, group, hike, emergency, travel

On a lot of hiking tracks, you might not have any cell phone service and network. If you’re planning of splitting up from a group or arranging to meet at trailheads, walkie talkies can be a great way to communicate among all your partners.

Hair Ties

Ladies and Gentlemen with long hair … it’s for you. Always carry a pack of hair ties, even if you’re planning of getting your photoshoot done during the hike. You’ll be thankful to me.

Hand Sanitizer

It is not realistically possible to wash your hands outdoors, my recommendation is to pack a travel size hand sanitizer in your backpack. It doesn’t take a lot of space.
