How Food Affects Your Spirituality

Your spiritual life has different fluctuations. The ups and downs of your spiritual life depend a great deal on numerous effects in life. In this article, we’ll see how the food you eat can affect your spiritual life and what you can do about it.

How frequently you had the intention to pray with modesty ( modesty in prayer), yet you only noticed at that the end of Salah that you weren’t concentrated at all?

How frequently were you determined not to look at the contrary gender and did end up doing exactly that?

As you may have noticed, your connection with Allah rises and falls. Numerous factors affect the ups and downs of your spiritual life, they can be your sins, lack of worship, bad company etc.

View of Health

If I ever meet you in person and ask you about your health, you would say that you are healthy, just because your body is free from any illness. That’s good but it’s a very little definition of health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, internal and social well-being and not simply the absence of any disease or infirmity.” This statement is true. Still, our religion takes a much broader and a more holistic approach to defining health.

The Islamic description of health is not just related to our physical, internal and social well-being rather, it also includes our emotional and spiritual well-being too. And these two factors tend to be neglected in conversations and definitions of health. Still, our real long term health depends on such a holistic view. You're a sophisticated creation of Allah your body, mind, feelings and spirituality are all connected. Anything that affects your mind also affects your body too.

For example, when you don't take care of your body and get sick, it affects your spirituality too. Haven't you noticed, how even a little headache makes it challenging to focus in your salah?

Protect Your Mind

One of the objectives and purposes of our religion is to protect our mind. Things that negatively affect the mind are prohibited in Islam. That is why Quran and Sunnah prohibit specific foods and drinks for us, such as alcohol, drugs, blood, pork, because these foods not only affect our body, they harm our mind also and also our spirituality too.

While the list of prohibited (haram) foods is very clear given to us, there are also foods that are allowed and they are halal but not good for our body, mind or spirituality. As Muslims, we always look for food which is halal, but often we forget to ask whether it is good for us or not. The commandment of Allah is very clear in this matter:

“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Shaytan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”  (Al-Quran 2:168)

Halal and Good Food

Whatever you eat should not only be halal but also good. Islam encourages us to eat food which is rich with vitamins, nutrients, etc. And it discourages to eat food that has some components of harm to our body and mind.

Mostly, food which is slightly processed and closest to its natural state is good. These are called whole food or real food, such as

  • fruits
  • vegetables
  • fish
  • meat
  • grains
  • nuts
  • seeds etc.

Healthy Eating Improves Your Spirituality

If you want to improve your connection with Allah, you want to make it really easy for yourself to do the good things and really hard to do the bad things. When you eat healthily and eat until you feel slightly full, your mood, energy, thinking pattern and even your sleep improves, and all these improvements help you to amplify your spirituality. Try to eat as healthily as possible for few weeks and see whether or not you notice all these changes in your life.
